MTMS ELL Supports
MTMS ELL Supports
Our program, in accordance with Ohio Law, works to provide equal educational opportunities to students who are acquiring English as a new language, so they can attain English proficiency in order to achieve mastery of the State’s learning standards. Such instruction takes place during the regular school day.
-
In the Miami Trace English Learners (EL) program, we believe that all students will achieve high levels of proficiency in the English language.
-
EL Support Staff supports English Learners (EL) through various research-based practices aligned with the Ohio Learning Standards. Below are examples of our English Learners services:
Push-In
This model provides English Language Development instruction within the student’s classroom. The EL Support Staff collaborates with the classroom teacher to assist the Emergent English learner. Students receive instruction in English and can access native language support if needed.
Pull-Out
In this model, English Language Development instruction is provided to Emerging English learners outside of the mainstream classroom for a specific block of time. The EL Support Staff conducts these sessions. Students receive instruction in English and can access native language support if needed.
Monitoring
EL support staff monitor students' participation in mainstream ELA and content area classes to ensure continued success in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Monitoring includes ongoing assessments, collaboration with EL support staff, and additional support if needed.
Bilingual Assistance
Bilingual Assistance may be incorporated with any service delivery options listed above. It helps bridge the communication gap between our students/parents and school staff. -
All new Miami Trace School District families complete the Language Use Survey as part of the registration process with FinalForms.
Once potential English Learners are identified, MTLSD assesses these students using the Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS).
The EL support staff will notify parents of the English Learner identification and determine if they wish for their child to receive EL services. -
An EL student will exit the MTLSD EL Program after demonstrating English proficiency using the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA). A student is proficient with any score combination of 4s and 5s across all non-exempt domains.
After exiting the MTLSD EL Program, the student will continue to be monitored annually for progress over two years.
